The City of Reus is installed on Thursday 21 June a wooden replica of the sculpture known as "Jewish Raval" in front of the building at the corner between the suburb of Santa Ana and Calle Vilar. The Mayor of Reus, Carlos Pellicer, has discovered a plaque that was installed at the street number 9 Vilar, explaining the history of this particular wood carving, the original which is preserved in the bottom of the Municipal Museum of Reus. The replica, synthetic resin, has been decorated with the original colors that were detected during the last study and conservation work carried out in the original size.
The construction of replication and restoration of the facade which has been reinstalled thanks to the coordination of the Department of Culture, Architecture and Urbanism of Public Roads, and the Municipal Tourism and Trade.
The piece
Since 1940, the Museum of Reus preserved wooden sculpture, anthropomorphic, like a sort of Cupid adult, smiling and speaking of modern satirists, with traces of polychrome and almost natural size (157 cm height), which is popularly known as the "Jewish Raval", which also figure in the museum for details. Is an unknown, has been dated to the mid-eighteenth century.
The carving in question had been installed, until 1925, at the top of the corner of the front of the current numbers 13 a suburb of Santa Ana Street and 9 in Vilar (formerly said of the Ox ). More or less the same point, you can also view embedded in the angle of the building, a sort of emblem of small stone, carved with a simple decoration, plant type, and where there are relief- - the 1763 figure, which apparently correspond to the year of construction or completion of the oldest part of the house. Suffice to say that is not the same stone in different shape and decoration, which supported the left of that size and you can see some pictures and postcards of early twentieth century. Not necessarily, therefore, must be linked with the 1763 date of manufacture or installation of the sculpture.
In 1925 the piece was removed from its place, coinciding with the construction of a floor or two in the building (expansion confirmed by the certificate of land for urban and engraved with the date 1926 is be seen in the upper facade), by Mr. Francis Gay. This gave the owner likes the Reading Center and then went to the museum part of this cultural association Reus. From there it was withdrawn in May 1940, along with other materials, and then entered the Municipal Museum called "Prim Rull," Rull be installed in at number 27 Carrer de Sant Joan.
Possible origin of carving
(Excerpt from the article "On the Jewish suburb called" James Masso Carballido)
Given the time attributed the decline as "Jewish Raval," is very difficult to figure out what causes was placed at the corner of the house in the street of Vilar. Known, but at least three hypotheses that attempt to explain it, two of which are quite similar. Ramon Amigó, mentioned in the book, gives us the version that seems to have more credibility: "The owner of the house from the street side of the Ox makes the suburb of Santa Ana was built and hung under the eaves as a result of Having lost a lawsuit with the neighbor to the house which pointed the finger image. " The authors of that history graph includes two other versions, which-rightly-considered contradictory, "according to the complaint was brought to attention by the shopkeeper to set the home front, as the other was the charge of the owner of the house, against his neighbor, bad dealer and a cheat, Jew. "
For the position of the arm, the photos, it seems that the figure indicated by the houses with the numbers 6 and 4 present the suburb of Santa Anna, but would be very difficult to know the owners and shopkeepers of the eighteenth century hypothetically related to the issue. Perhaps a thorough archival research-and-fortunate could clarify this.
The figure has inspired poems and prose popular, more or less satirical in tone, and even served as a reference to sainete "What the Jewish Suburb of Reus," premiered at the Fortuny Theatre on May 5, 1889 with text and music of Michael Dominic Power Planas (Reus authors).
